Ethnic skin types are skin types/color which is dominated by the presence of melanin. It includes Asian, African, Middle Eastern, South European, Native American and South American skin. Dr. Rebecca Ogunyemi Oluwabukola shared with us specific characteristics of ethnic skin as well as the importance of its deep cleansing.

The common skin issues people with ethnic skin deal with are hyperpigmentation, often caused by acne, and Melasma (brown to grey skin patches).

What’s your skin type?

There are so many external factors that influence skin health. The most common ones are ultraviolet rays (the sun), climate change, pollution, smoking, use of harsh products, improper use of products, stress, etc. The kind and choice of cleansers best for the skin depends on the different skin types.

Normal to Dry Skin

If you have normal to dry skin, you could use gel cleansers or cream-based cleansers that contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acids, glycerin, ceramides, etc.

Sensitive Skin

People with sensitive skin type should opt for mild cleansers that are sulfate and fragrance-free. Foaming cleansers should also be avoided as it could strip out natural moisture from the skin.

Oily Skin

Do you have oily skin? Then the gel-based cleansers are perfect for you! Cleansers with non-comedogenic ingredients such as green tea, aloe vera, citric acid, etc, are great so pores won’t be clogged.

Combination Skin

Gel or light foaming cleansers are top picks for this skin type.

Acne Prone-Skin

If your skin is prone to breakouts, the best cleansers are those that contain key ingredients like salicylic and glycolic acid. Cleansers that also contain too many oils and lipids should be avoided.

Also, one important note, no matter what is your skin type. Do not use bar soap! it is never a good idea because it can clog pores and dry out the skin.

What does cleansing mean to you?

When you hear about cleansing, what comes to your mind? For me, cleansing is an opportunity to take out impurities from my skin and also prepare my skin for the application of other products. It is the most important part of my skincare routine.

I am classified as someone with a combination skin type. I sometimes like to deep cleanse my skin. Deep cleansing basically means a skincare routine that is aimed or directed to clean your very deep pores and requires extra steps. This Multi-step facial would leave you with healthy-looking skin and I do this once or twice a week.

The first step is to start with a cleansing session and I like to do this with the help of my LUNA 3 cleansing device by FOREO, alongside a light foaming cleanser. This device works by using sonic pulsations which is beneficial for the skin because it deeply cleanses, exfoliates and removes almost all of dirt, dead skin cells and other impurities from the skin. Sonic cleansing will not only help you remove impurities and excess oil from your skin but also fight the effects of pollutants on your skin. My skin is left feeling really soft and clean after using the device.

LUNA 3 is MUST

After that, I go on to do other procedures like steaming, exfoliating with a chemical exfoliant, using a face mask, applying serums and moisturizing my skin. Voila! My deep cleansing facial is done. I also noticed that my skincare products penetrate into my skin better since I started using LUNA 3, which makes products in my routine much more effective. In terms of texture as well, my skin has improved.

On days I do not do a multi-step facial, I also use my LUNA 3 during my daily cleansing routine. It is safe to use on a daily basis because its silicon bristled brushes are non-abrasive and gentle on the skin. I’d highly recommend adding LUNA 3 as a cleansing device to your skincare routine. It has helped improve the general condition and appearance of my skin.
