{"id":1222,"date":"2017-04-21T09:34:53","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T09:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/?p=1222"},"modified":"2022-03-03T08:19:29","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T08:19:29","slug":"changing-face-farming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/changing-face-farming\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing the Face of Farming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In honor of Earth Day, get acquainted with\u00a0the GreenWave farmers working to save the planet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is GreenWave?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2015, we<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/3d-farming-is-changing-our-diets-the-economy-and-the-planet\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">profiled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> GreenWave, a member of FOREO\u2019s Board of Ocean Conservation charity partners, and detailed the global impact of their groundbreaking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/see-the-new-3d-ocean-farm-thatll-save-the-sea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3D Ocean Farming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> methods. Since then, they have increased their efforts to restore and rebuild ecosystems and provide new green jobs for farmers. We had a chance to talk with some of the farmers involved for a closer look at GreenWave\u2019s initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Original Ocean Farmer<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1223 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/GreenWave_Bren.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/GreenWave_Bren-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/GreenWave_Bren.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201c&#8230;developing a sustainable method of ocean farming has been a journey of ecological redemption.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bren Smith, founder &amp; CEO of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/greenwave.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Greenwave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, pioneered the restorative 3D ocean farming movement. For him, \u201cdeveloping a sustainable method of ocean farming has been a journey of ecological redemption.\u201d After dropping out of high school, Smith worked for the worst polluters in the fishing industry: on factory trawlers and industrial salmon farms. While working as an oysterman on Long Island Sound, hurricanes Irene &amp; Sandy hit back-to-back, nearly destroying everything he had. It was then he realized just how much the climate crisis could cost those who work on the water. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey will be the first to lose their jobs &#8211; and their way of life &#8211; should climate change go unchecked.\u201d So, he began to work toward building a more sustainable way to fish, founding GreenWave to train a new generation of ocean farmers &amp; create new jobs for his community while fighting climate change through carbon sequestration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Farmers of the Future<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the core components of GreenWave\u2019s vision is to create jobs in what they call the \u201cBlue-Green Economy.\u201d In order to do this, their Farm Startup Program makes the journey to harvest easier on farmers, whether just starting out or highly experienced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1224 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/GreenWave_Dave.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/GreenWave_Dave-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/GreenWave_Dave.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dave, an 11th generation commercial fisherman-turned-restorative ocean farmer, is in his second year of the program, and will be growing seaweed on his farm in Rhode Island this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>&#8220;My fellow fisherman, when I first went into this a few years ago, they would give me a blank stare when I told them what I was up to. And now, we&#8217;ve gotten to a point where people are starting to [\u2026] suggest how they could be involved in the seaweed business, too.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1226 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/MYSA-GreenWave-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/MYSA-GreenWave-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/MYSA-GreenWave-2.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nick, in his first year of the farmer training program, is a former land-based farmer who transitioned to ocean farming due to increasing costs of leasing\/owning farm land. The cheaper cost of ocean space drew him in, but the larger implications of the environmental benefits hooked him for the long haul.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201cI&#8217;d like to hear kids in school say, \u2018I want to be an ocean farmer when I grow up.\u2019&#8221;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beginning in November 2017, Nick will be growing on his own Connecticut-based farm.<\/p>\n<h2>The Impact<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1225 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/MYSA-GreenWave-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/MYSA-GreenWave-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.foreo.com\/mysa\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/MYSA-GreenWave-1.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With a hatchery, six farms already growing, and ten more in various stages of development, GreenWave is making a significant impact on the Southern New England Reef. \u201cWe are working to ensure a range of channels of distribution for our farmers\u2019 goods.
