We’re living in an era of special emphasis on self-care and skincare, but when we talk about skincare, we’re mostly referring to woman. We’re here today to gently remind you that skincare is as important for men as it is for women. Men’s skin, like women’s, faces everyday challenges from environmental factors, stress, and age, and that is why proper skincare is essential for achieving a healthy complexion as well as boosting self-esteem and overall well-being.

What is Men’s Skin All About?

Thickness and Density

As men have a greater amount of collagen and elastin, their skin is thicker and denser than women’s. Because of this structural advantage, fine lines and wrinkles appear at a slower pace, giving men a more youthful appearance as they age. This thickness, however, can make the skin more prone to excess oil production and certain skin issues such as acne.

The recent study of The International Journal of Women’s Dermatology found that skin indicators such as hydration, transepidermal water loss, sebum, microcirculation, pigmentation, and thickness are often higher in men.

Higher Sebum Production

Men’s skin has more active sebaceous glands than women’s, which are responsible for creating the natural oils (sebum) of the skin. While this can help to keep your skin naturally hydrated, it can also lead to oily skin and an increased risk of acne. Proper skincare, especially frequent washing and moisturizing, aids in the controlling of sebum levels and the prevention of clogged pores.

Shaving and Ingrown Hairs

For those that are not embracing their inner Vikings, shaving is another (for some even everyday) potential cause of skin problems. Constant shaving causes irritation, redness, and ingrown hairs, which prompts men to seek out skincare routines to sooth irritated shaved skin.

We’re here to propose a simple skincare routine for men to help to tackle all of the problems mentioned above.
