PAP vs. Peroxide
issa™ advanced teeth whitening gel is formulated with 18% PAP to break down stains without gum sensitivity. How come there is no sensitivity, and why is PAP better than peroxide for teeth whitening?
PAP, or for the crowd in fancy lab coats (say this quick three times and remember it for Scrabble evenings), Phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid (in this case 18%), is not hydrogen peroxide. It is a peroxide-based oxidizing agent (which is what cleans the stains from our teeth). But it is not the same, because an organic peroxide, PAP, does not decompose into hydrogen peroxide. PAP also doesn’t cause free radical damage or teeth sensitivity that a regular peroxide-based whitening agent would. Technically, it still belongs to the organic peroxide family because its molecular structure contains a glasses-like peroxide bond (-O-O-), but acts completely differently. Chemistry is amazing.
In short, PAP breaks down tooth stains through oxidation, targeting the discolored molecules on and within the tooth surface without releasing free radicals. In traditional peroxide dental bleaching treatments, free radicals penetrate the enamel, stealing electrons from stable cells to balance themselves out and irritating the dentinal tubules - tiny channels that connect to the nerve of the tooth. This is what causes the sharp sensitivity and post-treatment soreness so many people experience with peroxide whitening, but with 18% PAP, you can keep the enamel and gums safe without compromising whitening efficacy.
