Double Cleansing: Mega Useful or Myth?
Two facial cleansers must be better than one, right? Well, it’s not quite that simple. For all of us living in capitalism central, the idea that two is better than one when it comes to possessions has been seared into our consciousness. GWPs, freebies, two-for-ones, two-car garages, twin phantasies… But is double cleansing just a logical extension of this gluttony to consume more, and the brands’ delight in us being willing to spend more? After all, two cleansers are not really simplifying our life and routine, nor bringing us a step closer to clean minimalism we pretend we want – binge-watching decluttering videos in one window, and scrolling Amazon in the other. Dual cleansing is twice the work and takes twice as long in front of the bathroom mirror. Is it worth it? Does this extra effort actually mean twice the benefits?
K-beauty routines are everywhere, drowning the communal spaces of social media in secrets to impossibly clean, glowing skin. These people seem to possess some dollesque, poreless quality, which seems eerie when presented like this but is aesthetically astonishing, and I’d give a sliver of my soul for it. Is double cleansing the key to this? Can it be? Does double cleansing work? This is what we’ll be talking about today. We’ll quickly cover what double cleansing is. And we’ll answer questions like: Do I need it? Does double cleansing work for oily skin? What products do I need? Can double cleansing damage skin? When to skip it?
Get comfortable, pour yourself a cool beverage, and let’s learn.
Before TikTok, There Were Geishas
Long before droves of influencers swore by double cleansing, and nail tapped their way into monetizing their opinions and aesthetics, there were geishas and the Kabuki theatres of 16th and 17th-century Japan. These were built on the impenetrable masks of heavy white makeup, a traditional Japanese product called oshiroi. This white powder formed a uniform surface on the face, creating a blank canvas for inscribing the traditional beauty ideal of its time and space coordinates. But oshiroi was difficult to remove with water alone. Beauty histories often describe geishas, maikos, and Kabuki performers using various oils to dissolve this heavy makeup layer before water-based cleansing. Tsubaki (camellia) oil was especially popular.
This is where the idea originated, but these communities didn't yet call it double cleansing. Still, the practice caught on, stuck for centuries, and was formalized when Shu Uemura introduced a commercial cleansing oil in 1967, helping establish the oil-cleansing concept in modern Japanese beauty. The K-beauty movement we know and love today fully adopted it. So no, Korea didn’t invent double cleansing, but the booming Korean beauty culture played a huge role in turning it into the recognizable skincare ritual.
Double cleansing was then exported to Western consumers through Korean beauty brands and social media edifices powering the K-beauty craze. At its simplest, double cleansing today means cleansing your face twice, using two different types of cleansers - first an oil-based cleanser (oil or a balm), followed by a water-based one (the foamy, soapy one).
Does double cleansing work?
Yes, it does, and splendidly so. An oil-based cleanser cuts through and melts gritty stuff like heavy or stage makeup, sunscreen, and excess sebum. The reason it works is that like attracts like - in this case, non-polar molecules of oils attract each other (and repel water), and that’s how you lift the heavy, oilier stuff off the skin.
A water-based cleanser as a second step removes remaining sweat, dirt, and residue, and gently removes excess oils left over from the first step, along with your natural excess sebum. Basically, think of the first cleanse as the makeup remover and the second as the proper face wash. If the water-based step leaves you feeling squeaky, like literally (and we don’t use the word literally cheaply) squeaky, then your water-based cleanser is too strong and has stripped away your skin barrier, aka unprotected skin, premature aging, damage. You should restore moisture and protection. Stripping is quite saucy and exciting, but not when we’re talking about the skin.
As a cleansing technique, double cleansing can help remove makeup, sunscreen, and other buildup more thoroughly. But that doesn't mean everyone needs to do it every night. You may only want to use it in the evening on days when you’ve worn a full face of makeup. Maybe it was a party, a big date, holiday season, you were ovulating (women wear more makeup then), or you felt you needed to cover up some breakouts. And no need to use it in the morning if you’ve cleansed your face before bed (please, this is the bare minimum; don’t go to bed with makeup).
Do you need to double cleanse?
Don’t just accept everything you’re told. Use reason when you’re being sold something. A lot of it is just skincare hype and an industry trying to get you to jump on the bandwagon by cultivating FOMO because it increases profits. Trends come and go, but the truth is an institution that's hard to budge. So is double cleansing necessary for everyone with a face? No.
For plenty of people, one thorough cleanse with a gentle cleanser is perfectly fine. If you don’t wear makeup and have really sensitive skin, you can also do one face wash a day with just water, ideal for a quick morning refresh. Most dermatologists are more concerned about the trend of over-washing and the skin irritation it can cause than underwashing.
Skip a double cleanse if you have
- Dry or dehydrated skin: It can strip away essential natural oils, making you feel like your skin is a number too small and causing flaking.
- Sensitive skin or rosacea: More mechanical manipulation in double cleansing can trigger redness, stinging, and irritation.
- Compromised skin barriers: If your skin barrier is already damaged from stuff like over-exfoliating or harsh actives. Still, a water-based second step may do more damage in this case, especially if it is very foamy and stripping.
- People who don’t wear makeup or heavy SPF: If you do not wear heavy makeup, waterproof products, or sunscreen, a single gentle cleanser is more than enough. No need to buy extra products that have no tangible purpose. You don’t need a boat garage if you have (or need) no boat.
Use a double cleanse if you
- Wear makeup regularly, particularly long-wear or waterproof formulas that you wear all day. We all like to feel beautiful, refine our features, and emphasize our best features. Makeup also helps us express ourselves and communicate with the outside world. Is there some vanity? Perhaps, but all the people I know who love makeup are aesthetically inclined and almost regard it as a daily art form.
- Wear water-resistant sunscreen. The sun is a nuclear furnace, and what the Earth gets hit with is radiation. It is not just jubilant light and comfy warmth; it is true radiation, where the light and warmth we experience are the downstream effects of radiation. Some parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are good, some neutral, and some harmful - like UV radiation, an ionizing radiation that has mutagenic effects on DNA, causing premature aging and melanomas.
- Have oily or congestion-prone skin. Seems a bit counterintuitive to put something with an oily base onto skin that’s already secreting too much of its own oil. But remember, like attracts like? The double cleanse will do a good job of picking up excess sebum, making it less likely a pore will congest and lead to a breakout.
- Exercise or sweat heavily during the day, or live in a particularly polluted environment, you may feel like dirt has seeped into your pores and a regular cleanse just won’t cut it. It feels like you need to go deeper.
These are all just suggestions. I am not you; you are not me; we are not he; and she is not we. People are very different when it comes to our close-ups. Don’t just take stuff for granted. Assess the validity of advice in the light of your own private circumstances and idiosyncrasies. Craft a routine that fits you exactly. There is no one-size-fits-all in anything, life, or skincare alike. If your skin is already clean and comfortable after one gentle cleanse, adding another step won't automatically improve a system that already works for you.
Skincare isn't a competition to see who can fit the most steps into a routine. Time is something we invest or trade for benefits. We intuitively know this and default to the simplest way of doing life chores that need to be done. Below you’ll find a simple in-and-out dual-cleansing method that won’t take up your evening, but will maximize the benefits you can get in 2 minutes.
Step-by-step double cleansing
We’re keeping it simple with a to-the-point, no-nonsense, practical, fast Swedish dual-cleansing routine that fits into your life and onto your bathroom shelf. It involves two cleansers - LUNA™ Buttercloud Cleansing Balm and LUNA™ Micro-foam Cleanser 2.0 - and a soft silicone face massage brush, LUNA™. If you’re not really into skin tech, you can, of course, just use the cleansers and your hands, but once you try the brush, oh man, there’s no going back.
Step 1: LUNA™ Buttercloud Cleansing Balm
A cleansing oil or balm is always the first step in a double cleansing routine. And always on dry skin because water and oil repel, and a wet face will only make the oil-based cleanser’s job more difficult.
In our case, take a pea-sized scoop of LUNA™ Buttercloud Cleansing Balm and gently massage it all over your face and neck to break down makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil. Take your time around areas where makeup or SPF is thicker, like the nose for SPF, or the eyes for long-wear waterproof mascaras and eyeliners.
The LUNA™ Buttercloud Tri-phase Cleansing Balm has three wardrobe changes; that's where the fancy “tri-phase” part of the nomenclature comes from. It transforms from a buttery balm that melts on contact with warm skin into a lightweight, non-comedogenic oil, then climaxes in a light milky emulsion when you add water at the end. In its milk form, it easily rinses off, leaving zero heaviness; great news for the owners of oily skin screaming in terror every time anyone suggests putting any sort of oil on their face. The Buttercloud Balm effortlessly hits everything from hardcore SPF, waterproof and stage makeup, and daily lipid (oil) buildup without rubbing yourself silly and ending up red and irritated with a knee-high towel laundry pile.
LUNA™ Buttercloud Cleansing Balm is built on advanced lipid technology. It was engineered with a lipid architecture designed to dissolve a broad spectrum of makeup - from long-wear foundation and primer to waterproof mascara and SPF by leveraging the oil-attracts-oil science we’ve mentioned above.
Emulsify & Rinse
Once you’re done massaging your face and neck with the balm, and you’ve melted all the heavy areas, add a bit of lukewarm water into your palms and massage again as your cleansing balm or oil emulsifies into a milky texture. Then rinse thoroughly. No boiling-hot water. No aggressive rubbing. Your face is not a kitchen countertop; it needs a cleanse, not a scrub. Remember – the better you are to your skin barrier, the slower you’ll age (that’s why dermatologists also discourage crude mechanical scrubbing of the face in any way; the face has the thinnest and most easily damaged skin). Protect what’s naturally there, and you’ll need far less preparative and decorative cosmetics to get that glowing, glass skin.
The core of Buttercloud Balm is a curated blend of five rare botanical oils selected for their complementary lipid profiles and dissolving performance, and a bio-fermented, plant-derived, skin-compatible, 100% vegan squalene to fiercely protect the skin barrier. The oils are Sea Buckthorn Oil, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Himalayan Cherry Seed Oil, Milk Thistle Seed Oil, and Perilla Seed Oil.
Step 2: LUNA™ Micro-foam Cleanser 2.0
Now you’re nice and clean, and all of the heavy stuff has been rinsed off, but there are some leftovers of oil and sebum that may cause problems, especially for mixed, oily, or sensitive skin. You won’t feel heavy after Butercloud like you do with most other cleansing balms, which can leave a greasy feel. As a water-based cleanser, the goal of LUNA™ Micro-foam Cleanser 2.0 isn't to scrub every last molecule from your pores. It's to remove what's left of the oil while keeping your skin comfortable. Sterile is a very bad deal for the skin. It has a living microbiome that protects and strengthens it.
LUNA™ Micro-Foam Cleanser 2.0, comes as a silky cream that transforms into delicate microbubbles to gently expel impurities stuck in the pores, which lead to problems down the line. Free of fragrances & sulfates and made with 87% natural-origin ingredients, it is best used with a FOREO LUNA™ massaging facial device for a deeper, more efficient cleanse. Sure, you can also use your fingertips and will get benefits, but the facial brush means you’re hitting dirt, microcirculation issues, and premature aging all at the same time, as you’re cleansing.
The heart of this light cleanser consists of hydrating and soothing amino acids, precious antioxidant vitamin E and Chameleon plant, soothing superstar Cica, microbiome-supporting Pullulan and Prebiotics.
In step 2, use your LUNA™ silicone sonic facial massage brush by squeezing some micro-foam cleanser onto the brush and washing your face for a total of one minute, gently moving the brush around and letting the soft silicone bristles and T-Sonic™ massage cleanse deep in pore.
LUNA™ brushes are clinically proven to be 35x more hygienic than brushes with nylon bristles and to remove a spectacular 99% of dirt, undesirable oil & makeup residue.
In a 28-day consumer trial:
- 100% of users report skin feels better after cleansing with LUNA™, compared to cleansing by hand.
- 100% of users report more refreshed and radiant skin.
- 98% of users report skin feels smoother and softer.

- 86% of users report skin looks & feels firmer and more elastic.
- 81% of users report reduced appearance of blemishes.
Since I'd not like our little teaching theatre here to go into season 10, I'll leave a place where you can find out more about LUNA™ facial brushes and compare the two most popular latest models, if you're interested in leveling up:

Step 3: Pat dry and continue your routine
To finish, gently pat your skin dry and move on to the rest of your nighttime routine if you have any further steps – a serum, moisturizer, and red light treatment, whatever you’re currently into. We recommend some form of deep hydration before bed, but certain skin types may feel completely comfortable and satisfied after this rich but quick Swedish double cleanse, so do what feels right for you. You may be fine in summer and need a bit extra in winter nights. You do you. Having two cleansers doesn't have to mean a ten-minute ritual. Two will do it.
Double cleansing for oily skin?
If you wash your face and a few hours later kids gather around below it to dance under this great glistening disco ball that is your forehead, your skin is oily, which is neither good nor bad. The bad news is you’ll have some trouble keeping your makeup in place and finding skincare that doesn’t clog your pores and make you break out, which gets even harder before your cycle. The good news is, nature built the hyperactive oil glands into your skin that’ll make your skin age more slowly, as it will always be coated in some extra sebum, an oily substance that protects you from the effects of harsh elements.
Many oily-skin owners try to overdry their face in their teenage years until they realize they’re making it worse: oily but dehydrated, and drying out more forces the skin to overcompensate. So, double cleansing for oily skin may sound weird, since the first step is so counterintuitively oily, but it actually helps prevent over-drying and irritation. It soothes as it removes excess old sebum, and it makes it much less likely to overcompensate by producing even more oil.
Remember, oily skin doesn't mean you should use the harshest cleanser possible. When choosing double cleansing products for oily or acne-prone skin, look for formulas that cleanse gently without leaving your skin feeling squeaky, tight, or uncomfortable. And definitely check that the ingredients are non-comedogenic, like those in LUNA™ Buttercloud Cleansing Balm and LUNA™ Micro-foam Cleanser 2.0. Dry or aging skin can go for heavier formulations, even some leave-on oils, but you, my dear oily skin sister, can’t. We’re built different.
If your skin feels tight after double cleansing, reconsider your products, try something else, even dispense with the double cleanse altogether, or just use the water-based cleanser and a facial brush. Very reactive skin may be better off with a single cleansing product, as every step adds more mechanical manipulation.
What are the benefits of double cleansing?
This section simply highlights what we’ve already explained above. Double cleansing benefits include:
1. More effective makeup removal
An oil or balm cleanser can help break down stubborn makeup before your regular cleanser.
2. Better removal of sunscreen
Especially useful if you're using a long-wear or water-resistant SPF.
3. Removal of excess sebum without overdrying
This can make the routine particularly appealing for oily or combination skin.
4. A cleaner starting point for your nighttime routine
Once makeup, SPF, and daily buildup are gone, you can get on with the rest of your skincare routine.
Can double cleansing damage your skin?
It can, if you overdo it. No need to go at it morning and evening every day. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, and the dose is the most important guard at the gates of good and bad, and cure and poison.
Using harsh cleansers, cleansing too frequently, or aggressively rubbing the skin multiple times a day can lead to dryness and irritation, caused by nothing more than our overzealousness.
If your skin starts feeling:
- Tight
- Dry
- Flaky
- Burning
- Red or unusually sensitive
…it may be time to simplify your routine. And if you have particularly sensitive, dry, eczema- or rosacea-prone skin, double cleansing may not be the best everyday approach. Nope. The road to hell is usually glistening with the tile of good intentions, but you still end up in hell.
Do you need to double cleanse in the morning?
No, there is no reason to. You’ll waste product and risk over-cleansing. The whole point of the first oil-based cleanse is to remove the day's accumulated makeup, sunscreen, oil, and grime. You haven't spent the night applying a full face of foundation - unless you have a very interesting night shift.
For most people, a simple gentle cleanse, or whatever approach works for your skin, is generally enough in the morning. Save the full double-cleansing method for the evening, when there's actually something worth removing.
Bottom line?
For all you bottom liners, is double cleansing necessary? Sometimes. And sometimes not. It’s a good idea from some professionals centuries back, not the law of nature.
If you’re wearing a full face of makeup, waterproof SPF, sweating your way through the smoggy city, or simply feel like your skin needs a more thorough cleanse at the end of the day, two cleansers can make perfect sense. One breaks down the heavy stuff; the other washes away what’s left. Simple. Logical. Effective. Try LUNA™ Buttercloud Cleansing Balm, LUNA™ Micro-foam Cleanser 2.0, and a facial brush for a 2-minute routine. There is no pride in wasting 3 quarters of an hour in front of the mirror.
But if you’ve had yourself a little staycation at home, worn no makeup or SPF, and your skin is perfectly happy after one gentle cleanse, you do not need to invent a second problem so that you can buy a second solution.
The best skincare routine is not the longest one. It’s the one that does exactly what your skin needs and nothing it doesn’t. So try double cleansing if it makes sense for you. Skip it if and when it doesn’t. Use it every evening if your lifestyle calls for it.
And remember: clean skin is good. Stripped skin is not. Your skin already comes with its own sophisticated little ecosystem, barrier, oils, microbiome, and all the rest of the beautiful machinery that keeps you alive and happy. You don’t need to wage war on it every night in the craze of “extra clean.” You’re a person, not a surgeon’s scalpel.
Easy peasy rules: Take off what needs taking off. Leave what needs to stay. Protect the barrier. Moisturize. And if one cleanser does the job beautifully, congratulations - you’ve just saved yourself money, time, and one more thing to do before bed.
Now go wash your face. Once or twice. You decide.
