A Case For Doubling The Cleanse

Look Good / Skincare

Double the cleanse, double the benefits.

Do you remember a time long ago when most people washed their faces with soap and water and called it a day? Thankfully, today we have 10, 12, even 20-step skincare routines. These serious rituals became a staple of selfcare, often viewed as well-deserved “me time”. While we endorse and support skincare routines of all shapes and sizes, we’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the most important step – cleansing.

What is double cleansing?

The art of washing your face seems simple at a first glance. You find a cleanser that suits you and you use it regularly. Unfortunately, more often than not, that isn’t enough. That’s why double cleansing is so popular. Throughout the day our skin and our pores accumulate makeup, sweat, dead skin cells, oils, airborne bacteria, pollution and more. If we don’t wash these away properly they can cause breakouts and aging signs. We’re cleansing twice because we’re trying to make sure we get rid of all the grime.

Mastering the double cleanse

To make sure you’re getting the most out of your double cleanse, here are a few simple guidelines. The first step is to use an oil-based cleanser, balm or micellar water to break-down and remove makeup, SPF and oils. Repeat until not a trace of makeup or residue is left on your cotton pad or washcloth. The second step consists of a cleanser – make sure you find one that works best for you – and water. This is the past where you’re trying to get deeper into the pores and get all the gunk out. So massage the cleanser into the skin in circular motions for about one minute. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Now your skin is ready for the rest of your routine!

The second cleanse is the tricky part – you can never be sure you’ve got all the dirt and pollutants out of your pores. That’s why we’re so proud of our superb facial cleansers and the incredible tech behind them. Did you know that FOREO’s LUNA range comes with sonic sound waves? When these waves are directed into your skin, they extend deep into your pores to gently shake loose dirt and make-up residue that washcloths can’t reach. They also increase circulation, exfoliate the skin without pulling on it and improve detoxification by stimulating your skin at the cellular level. LUNA mini 3 sends 8,000 T-Sonic pulsations per minute into your pores to clean your face better than pretty much anything else on the planet.

Why and when should you double cleanse?

The case for doubling the cleanse is clear – if you wear makeup you want to remove it before going in with a cleanser. Even if you don’t wear makeup but wear sunscreen (which everyone should) or live in a city – you want to get those oils and pollutants out of the way. This will make sure the cleanser has a better chance of doing its job. Of course, you should adjust your routine according to your skin type and avoid going in with anything too aggressive. Maybe double-cleansing two times a day might be a bit much for you or your skin. But a little bit of micellar water and a gentle cleanser (or a cleansing tool that’s perfectly gentle to your skin) go a long way.

Everyone can benefit from double cleansing at the end of the day. Getting rid of all those impurities will help stop breakouts and aging signs. Even more, now that your skin is a clean, empty canvas – all the other steps in your routine will work better! Congratulations!
